Taipei mayor departs for 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade
Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je

Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je arrived in South Korea on Sunday. He’s there to receive the flag of the Universiade, or world university games, at the closing ceremony on July 14.

Taipei is set to host the international sporting event for university athletes in 2017.

Ko was originally scheduled to take a domestic flight from Seoul Incheon International Airport to Gwangju. But domestic air travel has been disrupted due to Typhoon Chan-hom, forcing Ko and his delegation to travel instead by coach.

During his five-day visit to South Korea, the mayor and his group will stay overnight in a public housing community in Seoul. The goal is to observe the community’s planning and interior design. They will also meet with officials from the ultra-successful SM Entertainment Co, which is behind the popular Korean musical groups Girls’ Generation and Super Junior.
