A new opinion poll shows that the opposition Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen has a lead of nearly 20% over her rival. A local NGO – Taiwan Public Opinion Association – released the poll on Monday.
When asked who they would support, 43% said Tsai, while 24.2% said they would support the ruling Kuomintang’s (KMT) Hung Hsiu-chu.
The survey found that even if People First Party (PFP) Chairman James Soong throws his hat in the ring, Tsai would still garner the support of 41.4% of those polled.
When asked about the qualities of an ideal presidential candidate, the people surveyed said candidates should have a global vision and value public opinion.
The random telephone poll was conducted between July 7-9, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent, and a 95% level of confidence.
Taiwan is scheduled to hold its presidential elections next January.
