“’92 Consensus” crucial to cross-strait ties: Ma
President Ma Ying-jeou

President Ma Ying-jeou says that cross-strait relations will not encounter difficulties if Taiwan’s new leader follows the spirit of the “92 Consensus.”

He was speaking on Sunday afternoon in the Dominican Republic while meeting with the Taiwanese community there. It was the first leg of a three-country visit to Central America and the Caribbean.

The “92 Consensus” refers to a tacit agreement reached between Taiwan and China in 1992. Under the consensus, the two sides agree that there is only “one China”, although each may have its own interpretation of what “one China” means. This consensus has been used as a basis for interaction between the two sides.

Ma spoke about the importance of the “92 Consensus” and his policy of “no unification, no independence, and no use of force” in relations with China.

“We worked hard to forge these [policies]," said President Ma.

"They did not come out of the blue. Never take them for granted; [we] have worked so hard," he said. "[In cross-strait relations] we cannot just focus on goals, we also need strategies.”
