Several anti-nuclear power groups are announcing a running event on Saturday. They also say if the government does not promise to halt construction on the fourth nuclear power plant, or support the opposition party’s referendum proposal, they will call for an action to occupy the square in front of the Presidential Office.
Construction on the fourth nuclear power plant began in 1999 but remains incomplete. Opponents of the plant say it is located in an earthquake-prone area. A series of accidents during construction has also raised safety concerns.
In a press conference on Wednesday, the Taiwan Environmental Protection Union said that opposition to nuclear power is the Taiwanese people’s right. The union also said if the government does not respond by Friday, the group will occupy the square in front of the Presidential Office after the running event on Saturday.
Anti-nuclear Alliance of Fathers executive director Kobe Chih said he knows that taking to the streets will inconvenience many people. But he said the groups have no other options because the government is refusing to listen.
