President Ma Ying-jeou visited the church where former Democratic Progressive Party chairman Lin Yi-hsiung is fasting on Wednesday, but he was unable to see the former party leader.
Lin started fasting on Tuesday to demand that construction on the fourth nuclear power plant be halted and that the project be scrapped. He believes that the facility will never be safe.
Ma left a greeting card for Lin at the church because Lin refuses to see visitors during his fast. In his card, the president asked Lin to take care of himself. Ma also promised that a referendum will be held to decide the plant’s future once strict safety tests on the plant have been completed.
