The Vietnamese media reported Thursday the lifting of a Taiwanese ban on Vietnamese caregivers and fishermen.
The bans were put in place in 2004 and 2005 due to the high number of Vietnamese workers absconding from their jobs in Taiwan.
One Vietnamese news website (vntinnhanh.vn) wrote that Taiwan lifted the ban on Wednesday in order to meet domestic shortages of caregivers and fishermen. It said Taiwan lifted the ban because the number of missing Vietnamese workers in other sectors has gone down.
The report also indicated that Taiwan’s labor ministry will be allowing 10,000 workers from Vietnam into Taiwan in the next year, with the first group arriving within the next three months. Under new rules, Vietnamese workers will have to complete 390 hours of training on laws and regulations, Chinese language classes and professional caregiving courses before arriving in Taiwan.
