Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen has pledged to maintain cross-strait peace if she becomes president next year.
Tsai was responding Friday to a controversy triggered by an article written by Bonnie Glaser and Jacqueline Vitello. The two are researchers with the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
The article is entitled “Xi Jinping’s Great Game: Are China and Taiwan Headed towards Trouble?” In the article, the authors argued that “there is a significant possibility if Tsai Ing-wen is elected president of Taiwan next January, a cross-strait crisis could ensue.”
But Tsai said Glaser told the DPP that this sentence had been taken out of context. Tsai also reaffirmed the DPP’s China policy.
"If we take power next year, we will work to maintain cross-strait peace and assume the responsibility of maintaining stable and peaceful development," Tsai said. "We will keep in contact with all sides. We are able to understand the whole situation."
