President Ma Ying-jeou has concluded his trip to Latin America and the Caribbean, where he visited the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Nicaragua.
Ma arrived in Los Angeles Thursday, local time, for a brief stopover. He was greeted by hundreds of Taiwanese expats in front of the hotel where he was staying.
At a dinner with the Taiwanese community in Los Angeles, Ma said he hopes that Taiwan will maintain existing diplomatic policies after the 2016 presidential elections.
He said that’s because US-Taiwan relations are at their best point since the end of formal diplomatic ties in 1979. He also said that Taiwan’s ties with Japan and China are also at their highest point in the past decade.
Five U.S. burn specialists from Johns Hopkins University will fly to Taiwan along with President Ma to offer assistance to victims of the Formosa Fun Coast explosion, which injured hundreds in late June.
