Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) chairwoman and presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen says she will consider adopting an international carbon emissions reduction agreement as her policy.
Tsai made the comments on Friday at a symposium in Taipei. During the event, Tsai and Nobel Prize winner Lee Yuan-tseh had a dialogue with students. Lee raised the issue of climate change and the pledge of many countries to sign an agreement to reduce carbon emissions at the Paris Climate Conference scheduled for Nov. 30 to Dec. 12.
Tsai responded that she would consider making the contents of the upcoming agreement part of her policy.
Tsai said, however, making carbon emissions reduction a policy would be a big challenge for the DPP. This is because of the need to generate enough electricity while respecting the party’s pledge to make Taiwan nuclear-free by 2025.
