The ruling Kuomintang (KMT) is scheduled to hold a party congress on Sunday to officially nominate its presidential candidate Hung Hsiu-chu.
Party chairman Eric Chu, President Ma Ying-jeou, Legislature President Wang Jin-pyng and other party heavyweights will all be present at the meeting with the aim of creating an atmosphere of unity.
It is expected that Hung’s nomination as the party’s presidential candidate will be approved with applause in the congress. Hung will deliver her acceptance speech immediately after the nomination. In addition, the party congress will approve the inclusion of the so-called “1992 Consensus” in the party’s political platform. Under the 1992 Consensus, Taiwan and China both agree that there is only one China, and both sides are part of it. However, the two sides disagree as to what that China means.
Hung has agreed to follow the KMT’s party platform. Her previous statement of “one China, common interpretation” has given rise to concerns that she favors unification with China, a position that worries many Taiwanese people.
