President Ma Ying-jeou says he has always been concerned about Japan’s intent to change its security laws. He also says he will continue to follow the subsequent development after the approval of two controversial bills by the lower house of Japanese parliament. The bills will allow Japanese troops to fight overseas for the first time since the end of World War II. They still need the approval by the upper house.
Ma made the remarks on Friday in Los Angeles on his trip back to Taiwan after concluding visits to three diplomatic allies in Central America and the Caribbean.
During his stay in Los Angeles, Ma attended a dinner hosted by Taiwanese expatriates, visited Yanks Air Museum in Chino, California, where he met with American veteran Harold Javitt. Javitt, now 92 years old, is a former member of the American Volunteer Group, nicknamed the Flying Tigers, which helped defend China against Japanese forces in World War II.
Ma is scheduled to return to Taipei Saturday night.
