A group of doctors from Johns Hopkins is in Taipei to help with the burn victims who were injured in an explosion at a water park in New Taipei in late June.
So far, seven people have died from their injuries sustained during a party at the Formosa Fun Coast water park. Nearly 500 people were injured when colored powder that was sprayed on the partygoers exploded and burst into flames. Some 370 people are still in hospital; of those, 174 are in critical condition.
The group from Johns Hopkins made an unplanned visit to a local hospital on Sunday. The team includes five plastic and reconstructive surgeons and therapists. A sixth expert will join the team later.
During their two-hour visit to Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taipei on Sunday, the team viewed the burn victims through the hospital observation windows. A hospital official said that the group was satisfied with the quality of care being provided.
The medical team is also discussing the feasibility of transferring one of the patients – who is American – to a hospital near his home in Boston.
