President: Further trade liberalization needed for TPP membership
President Ma

President Ma Ying-jeou says that while the US is supportive of Taiwan’s bid to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), it hopes to see further trade liberalization in Taiwan as well.

Ma was speaking Wednesday at a meeting with senior members of Taiwan’s business community.

Ma said that joining the TPP and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) remain important goals for Taiwan. He said that the second round of multilateral talks on establishing the TPP are moving ahead as scheduled.

Ma said that the US, a key player in the TPP, welcomes Taiwan’s interest in the trade agreement. However, he said that in order to meet US expectations, Taiwan’s government must continue working to open up Taiwan to international trade.
