The Mainland Affairs Council is calling on China to show its intention to maintain cross-strait peace. That’s after footage of Chinese military exercises showed an attack on a red and white building that resembles Taiwan’s Presidential Office.
The Mainland Affairs Council says that Taiwan is determined to defend itself. A statement from the council Wednesday says that while cross-strait exchanges and dialogue can change and improve cross-strait relations, China must demonstrate its peaceful intentions.
The defense ministry has also reacted to the footage. Defense ministry spokesman David Lo said Wednesday that the people of Taiwan and international society find the footage unacceptable. Lo said the decision to use a building modeled on Taiwan’s Presidential Office as a target hurts Taiwan’s relationship with Mainland China.
But Lo also said that Taiwan’s armed forces are on guard and the defense ministry is working to protect Taiwan against any military action.
