A Chinese tourist is likely to face a fine of NT$300,000 (around US$10,000) after his drone hit the landmark Taipei 101 skyscraper.
The incident on Tuesday involved an aerial photography drone smashing into Taipei 101, the tallest building in Taiwan. A video clip of the collusion was shown on TV Wednesday, provoking national security concerns.
Taiwan’s Civil Aeronautics Administration confirmed on Thursday that the Chinese tourist violated regulations. However, the administration also said that the Chinese tourist is a first-time offender, so he will likely end up paying a fine. An official with the administration, Chu Kuan-wen
"Yesterday we questioned the man together with the Taipei Songshan Airport and the Aviation Police Bureau," Chu said. "After questioning, we found that his drone was flying within the six-kilometer radius of the Songshan Airport at a height of above 60 meters, which is restricted."
This is the third time in a month that a drone has smashed into the Taipei 101 skyscraper. The government is set to amend laws in September to regulate drones.
