Foreign Minister David Lin is in El Salvador to meet with leaders of the Salvadoran government and strengthen bilateral ties.

The foreign ministry said Friday that Lin had met with Salvadoran President Salvador Sanchez Ceren and Salvadoran foreign minister Hugo Martinez. Lin has also met with El Salvador’s vice president and the head of the country’s legislature.

The foreign ministry says it hopes a meeting between Lin and the General Secretary of the Central American Integration System (SICA) will see closer cooperation between Taiwan and Central America. SICA counts a number of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies among its members.

Lin has also accepted an invitation to speak on Taiwan’s experience of democratization at the ministerial conference of the Community of Democracies. The conference runs through Friday. Lin will also be speaking about the economic development that democratization has brought to Taiwan.
