President Ma Ying-jeou has greeted Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, who arrived in Taiwan for a state visit Friday.
During his welcoming remarks, Ma praised the state of Taiwan-Honduras ties. He said that this year marks the 74th year of diplomatic ties between Honduras and the Republic of China. The Republic of China is Taiwan’s official name.
President Ma said that he has a personal fondness for Honduras, having visited the country once during his term as Taipei mayor and twice during his presidency.
He said he was impressed by the country’s maturing democracy and the Honduran government’s determination to pursue development.
Ma said that Taiwan and Honduras have continued cooperation in the areas of agriculture and fisheries, and are now cooperating in the areas of education and culture as well. Ma also thanked Honduras for its support of Taiwan’s participation in international organizations.
Hernandez said he hopes his visit will highlight Honduras’ close ties with Taiwan. He said he also hopes his visit will attract more Taiwanese investment in Honduras.
