An economics ministry official says foreign direct investment (FDI) in Taiwan is expected to reach US$11 billion this year.

The official is Chen Wen-bin, deputy head of the ministry’s Department of Investment Services. His comments on Saturday came amid concerns that companies are leaving Taiwan because the investment environment is deteriorating.

Economics ministry statistics show that foreign investment in Taiwan has in fact increased steadily since 2008. The FDI figures for the first half of his year is US$5.767 billion. Chen said the ministry is confident that FDI in Taiwan will top US$11 billion this year.

Chen said in recent years, foreign investments have shifted to sectors such as domestic consumption, high-end manufacturing, and research and development. He said companies such as Carrefour, Costco, and Synopsys have all made large investments in the country.
