Investment from abroad in Taiwan has amounted to US$82.4 billion from 2002 to 2014. That’s the word from the economics ministry on Monday.
The top three sectors for investment have been manufacturing, finance and insurance, and wholesale and retail. Most manufacturing businesses focused on electronic components and computer and optic products.
During the same time period, Taiwan businesses have invested over US$124 billion in China. Manufacturing accounted for over three-fourths of that investment, and amounted to even more than the foreign investment in Taiwan. This shows that investment in China is still the major trend.
But the economics ministry said that investment from foreigners and overseas Chinese in Taiwan has been steady at about US$5 billion a year. The number of cases in the first half of this year has increased 5% over last year and the investment amount has increased 4.5%.
