Taiwan, Japan working on food safety MOU

Taiwan and Japan are currently working on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on food safety. That’s in light of a ban Taiwan placed on imports of food from five Japanese prefectures since 2011 amid fears of radiation from the Fukushima nuclear disaster. As of May, new rules require that all imported Japanese food products come with proof-of-origin certificates.

Foreign ministry official Chou Shyue-yow said on Tuesday that Taiwan and Japan have held many meetings to work on the MOU. Details of the memorandum have not been made public.

Chou said that currently only Taiwan and China are imposing regional control measures on Japanese food imports. He said other countries including the US, European Union and Singapore are loosening restrictions. Others such as Canada, Australia and New Zealand have completely lifted restrictions.
