Taiwan confers Order of Brilliant Star on Sao Tomean foreign minister
Strengthening ties with an African ally

Taiwan has conferred the Order of the Brilliant Star on visiting Sao Tomean foreign minister Manuel Salvador dos Ramos. Taiwan’s foreign minister, David Lin, presented Ramos with the award on Friday.

The foreign ministry says that it awarded Ramos with the order in recognition of his work in establishing diplomatic relations between Sao Tome and Principe and Taiwan. The award also commends Ramos’ work towards building stronger ties between the two countries in the 18 years they have enjoyed diplomatic relations.

The foreign ministry says that Ramos has voiced his support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations at a number of international venues.

According to the foreign ministry, since May 1997, when Sao Tome and Principe officially recognized Taiwan, the two countries have worked to better the lives of Sao Tomeans. Joint projects include improvements to Sao Tome’s basic infrastructure, public health, and educational system.
