Ma reiterates Taiwan’s sovereignty over the Diaoyutai Islands
The ROC maintains its soverignity over the Diayoutais

President Ma Ying-jeou has reiterated Taiwan’s sovereignty over the Diaoyutai Islands in the East China Sea. The group of uninhabited islets is also claimed by China and Japan.

In an open letter to the Taiwan-based China Times published Monday, Ma said Taiwan’s sovereignty stems from history, geography, geology and international law.

Presidential Office Spokesman Charles Chen said on Monday that Ma’s open letter offers a complete and clearer discourse on Taiwan’s claim.

“President Ma emphasized that as president of the Republic of China, he has the determination in safeguarding Taiwan’s territory and sovereignty without budging an inch," said Chen.

In his open letter, Ma also demanded an apology from former president Lee Teng-hui. Lee said the Diaoyutai Islands belong to Japan and are not part of Taiwan’s territory during his recent trip to Japan.

Ma said Lee’s comments are unconstitutional and have violated international law. Ma also said the comments have jeopardized Taiwan’s sovereignty and hurt the feelings of the Taiwanese people.
