Protesters demonstrating against a new high school history curriculum are discussing whether to clear out from in front of the education ministry building. The discussions come as Typhoon Soudelor, the largest typhoon so far this year, approaches Taiwan.
On Thursday, protest leaders announced that they will base their decision on the strength of the typhoon. However, they said that they will not necessarily leave the education ministry if the Taipei City Government decides to close schools and workplaces. The protestors also said they will factor the degree to which their demands have been met into their decision.
Protestors ignored initial calls by Deputy Education Minister Lin Teng-chiao to leave the education ministry, where protests have entered their seventh day. Protest leaders say that they plan to announce a decision at 8:30pm. Typhoon Soudelor is expected to make landfall in Taiwan on Friday.
