Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines Ralph E. Gonsalves has thanked Taiwan for a scholarship program offering local students higher education.
Gonsalves was speaking Thursday local time at awards ceremony for the scholarship. Gonsalves said that sending students to study abroad is prohibitively expensive for most families and thanked Taiwan for helping train St. Vincent’s workforce.
This year’s event was hosted by Taiwan’s ambassador to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Ger Baushuan. The scholarship program has been in place since 2004. 17 local students received scholarships to study at Taiwanese universities. In the future Taiwan’s government plans to earmark US$1 million annually for the scholarship fund.
