Typhoon Soudelor has broken wind speed and wave height records in several parts of Taiwan.
According to the Central Weather Bureau, wind gusts recorded in Taipei on Saturday reached 39.2 meters per second, making them the second strongest to hit the city in 20 years. An observation station at Su’ao on the northeast coast recorded wind speeds of 66.1 meters per second, the second highest the station has ever recorded. Wind gusts left the station’s weather vane broken.
Meanwhile, Su’ao also saw waves reaching 17 meters in height. Lungtung northwards up the coast saw 17.1 meter waves. Waves in both areas have broken previous wave height records.
