DPP presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen in the lead: poll
Tsai Ing-wen

A new opinion poll released by a local think thank shows that Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen is in the lead in the presidential race.

The poll released Monday by the Cross-strait Policy Association found that the DPP chairwoman has nearly 43% of the votes, followed by James Soong of the People First Party at 23.3%. Ruling Kuomintang presidential candidate Hung Hsiu-chu came third with 16.8% of the vote.

The association said while Soong’s entering the race is a disadvantage to the KMT candidate, it also has a negative impact on Tsai as it will increase her chances of failing to secure a majority even if she wins.

Taiwan is scheduled to hold its presidential elections next January.
