The Taiwan Water Corporation said on Monday the supply of tap water will return to normal islandwide by midnight.
The strong winds and heavy rain brought by Typhoon Soudelor over the weekend left more than 420,000 households without water. The rapid increase in pollutants in tap water also prompted the public to stock up on bottled water.
Water Resources Agency official Lai Chien-hsin said on Monday that the level of pollutants is lessening at rain catchment areas in Shihmen Reservoir and Gaoping River Weir.
Lai said Typhoon Soudelor did not wreak havoc on water facilities.
“The typhoon brought strong winds and heavy rain," said Lai. "The rainfall was mostly centered in the north, some parts of southern Taiwan and the mountainous regions in Kaohsiung. After inspection, [we found that] our water facilities have not been damaged."
As water levels in all major reservoirs have increased, Lai said the supply of tap water will gradually return to normal.
