President Ma: Taiwan can help Honduras in disaster relief
Meeting Honduran defense minister

Honduran Defense Minister Samuel Armando Reyes Redon is visiting Taiwan for the third time. President Ma Ying-jeou met with him on Tuesday. Bilateral ties are strong as the two countries have had diplomatic ties for 74 years.

The two sides have had exchanges in the areas of trade, social welfare, medicine and construction. President Ma also told the Honduran official that Taiwan wants to share its experience in dealing with disasters.

Ma said, "Central America has to deal with El Nino effects which affect the harvest of agricultural crops. Our country immediately worked with your country to prevent famine and provide food. We hope to continue to work with your country in this area to lessen the impact of natural disasters."

The two sides have cooperated in many areas including agriculture, the fishing industry and education. Taiwan has also given scholarships to 30 Honduran students to study in Taiwan. Eleven are attending Taiwan’s military school while six Taiwanese students are studying in Honduran military schools.

President Ma has visited Honduras three times. Last month Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez came to Taiwan and the two signed a joint communiqué to strengthen ties.
