President to discuss nuclear issue with local leaders
Nuclear power out!

President Ma Ying-jeou, who also serves as chairman of the ruling party, the Kuomintang (KMT), is set to meet KMT mayors to discuss the controversial fourth nuclear power plant project.

A party official made the announcement on Saturday. Construction on the fourth nuclear power plant began in 1999 but remains incomplete. Opponents of the plant say it is located in an earthquake-prone area. A series of accidents during construction has also raised safety concerns.

Amid mounting calls for the plant to be scrapped and skepticism even among the KMT’s own mayors, the party official said that the KMT is hoping to build a consensus about the issue.

Meanwhile, a series of events in protest of nuclear power kicked off in Taipei. More than 1,000 people joined a running event, calling on the government to halt construction on the fourth nuclear power plant. The events will continue till Sunday.
