A Taiwanese exchange student has been listed as missing by the Japanese authorities.

Foreign ministry official Chou Shyue-yow said Friday that a search has been launched for the missing student. The student is identified by the surname Lu, and so far, there have been no reports that she has left Japan. Chou said that the foreign ministry has been coordinating with Japanese search efforts.

Earlier in the day, opposition Democratic Progressive Party legislator Huang Wei-che hosted a press conference in Taipei along with Lu’s grandfather. The lawmaker said Lu left for Japan last September and enrolled as an exchange student at a university in Kagoshima. Lu did not return to her dormitory on March 20 and has been missing ever since.

The foreign ministry said Lu left a note saying that she had chosen to leave the dormitory, but her grandfather did not believe she had left of her own will. The ministry said it will do its utmost to help in the search for Lu.
