Tropical storm Goni is gaining strength and could develop into a typhoon by Sunday night at the earliest. However, the Central Weather Bureaus says it’s still not clear whether it will hit Taiwan.
Forecasters say that Goni is about 2,690 km from Erluanpi, the southernmost point of Taiwan. They say the storm is packing sustained winds of 28 meters per second at its epicenter and is moving at a speed of 14 kph in a west northwesterly direction.
The bureau says that the outer rim of the storm could produce showers on August 21-22.
Meanwhile, a second storm, Atsani, has formed in the Pacific and is located 4,350 km east of Erluanpi.
Goni is the Korean word for swan while Atsani means lightning in Thai.
