Cabinet yet to decide on raises for civil servants
Cabinet Spokesman

Cabinet Spokesman Sun Lih-chyun says that there has not yet been an official decision on whether civil servants, members of the military, and teachers will get a pay raise next year.

Sun’s remarks follow on the heels of media reports which say that there will be no pay raise. An unnamed source said that President Ma Ying-jeou had supported such a decision, based on less-than-stellar economic growth in the second quarter of this year.

In an interview with the state-run Central News Agency on Sunday, Sun said that during an initial meeting, the Cabinet had decided not to allocate the pay raises in next year’s budget. But he said that a finalized budget had not yet been sent back to the Cabinet following that meeting.

Sun said that the final decision on pay raises would depend on the contents of that budget.
