Tropical storm Goni upgraded to typhoon; likely to affect Taiwan
Calm between two storms

Tropical Storm Goni has developed into a typhoon as of 2 am Monday morning. The Central Weather Bureau said the chances of it hitting Taiwan are high.

Goni is currently about 2,300 kilometers off the coast of Erluanbi, the southernmost tip of Taiwan. It’s continuing to move in a west northwesterly direction. The weather bureau says that Goni is likely to move toward the southern coast of Liuqiu, an island southwest of Taiwan. Forecasters are warning that the typhoon could bring huge waves to Taiwan’s north and east coasts, the Hengchun Peninsula down south, as well as Green Island and Orchid Island off the southeast coast.

Meanwhile, a second tropical storm, Atsani, has also developed into a typhoon. However, it is heading toward Japan so its effect on Taiwan could be minimal. Its current location is 4,000 kilometers east southeast of Taipei and moving in a west northwesterly direction.
