The International University Sports Federation (FISU) has given its approval to 79 facilities that will host events during the 2017 Universiade. The approval comes as Taipei gears up to host the games for the first time.
The Universiade is the second largest multi-sporting event in the world, second only to the Olympic Games. Unlike other international sporting events, all competitors in the Universiade Games are university students.
The main stadium has been switched from Taipei Dome to the Taipei Athletic Field. Other facilities include stadiums and fields at 12 schools around northern Taiwan. Final construction is set for completion by 2016.
Taipei will spend an estimated NT$3 billion (over US$92 million) to prepare facilities for the prestigious games. That’s after Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je cut the original budget for the games by over 40%.
