The foreign ministry has announced that Taiwan’s diplomatic allies will be speaking on Taiwan’s behalf at this year’s UN General Assembly meeting.

This year’s meeting is scheduled to open on September 15 and debates will continue into October. The meeting will include discussion of the UN’s development goals for the next 15 years. UN members will discuss topics including global security, water resources and the eradication of poverty.

On Thursday, foreign ministry official Michael Hsu said he hopes that the remarks of Taiwan’s allies will demonstrate that Taiwan is willing and able to engage in future global development issues.

Taiwan is excluded from the UN because of opposition from China. China sees Taiwan as part of its territory, even though the two sides have been ruled separately for more than 60 years.
