The Central Weather Bureau says that chances for issuing a land warning for Typhoon Goni are lower than previously expected. But the bureau says that people still have to prepare for heavy to torrential rain during the weekend.
According to the bureau on Saturday, as of 8:30am, the typhoon is centered at 280km to the southeast of the southernmost tip of Taiwan. It was moving in a north-northeast direction at a speed of 12kph.
The bureau said that the typhoon finally made the expected sharp turn towards the north in the early hours of Saturday. It said if the typhoon continues its current path, chances for a land warning to be issued are low.
On its current path, the typhoon is unlikely to make landfall in Taiwan. However, the bureau warned that Typhoon Goni will still have an impact on Taiwan as it is expected to move north off Taiwan’s eastern coast. This is likely to bring torrential rain to Yilan and Hualien. There are also chances of heavy rain in local areas in northern Taiwan.
