Typhoon Goni is posing to be less of a threat to Taiwan than original feared. Although the storm is weakening, meteorologists are still warning of the possibility of extremely heavy rain in parts of northern Taiwan.
As of 11:30am on Sunday, Typhoon Goni was located in waters about 260 km southeast of Taipei. It was moving in a north northeasterly direction past the main island of Taiwan at a speed of 23 km per hour. As of news time, the storm was packing winds of up to 40 meters per second near its center.
Although the storm has weakened, forecasters say it has now entered waters near Taiwan where it could have the greatest effect on the island. There are rain advisories in effect for Green Island, Orchid Island, the east coast, and northern Taiwan.
