Vietnam opposes Taiwan’s construction of lighthouse on Taiping Island

The foreign ministry on Tuesday reiterated Taiwan’s sovereignty over the Taiping Island in the South China Sea. That’s in light of Vietnam recently calling Taiwan’s construction of a lighthouse on the island an illegal act.

Taiping Island is the largest of the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. The islands have been at the center of territorial disputes between Taiwan, China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei.

Foreign ministry spokeswoman Eleanor Wang said Taiwan has infrastructure projects on the island mainly to provide supplies and maintenance work. The projects are to upgrade living conditions and to enhance research and environmental protection there.

Wang also emphasized that Taiwan’s sovereignty over the groups of islands in the South China Sea stems from history, geography and international law.
