On this day in 1991, the European Community recognized the independence of the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
 
This day in 2003 saw the beginning of the first six-party talks, involving South and North Korea, the United States, China, Japan and Russia. The six countries convened to find a peaceful resolution to the security concerns as a result of the North Korean nuclear weapons program.
 
On this day in 2004, taekwondo athlete Chen Shi-hsin won Taiwan’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in the Athens Olympic Games.
