Taiwan’s top China policy-maker, Mainland Affairs Council Minister Andrew Hsia, says an upcoming meeting with his Chinese counterpart will not be affected even if two cross-strait agreements are sent to the legislature for review.
Hsia made the comments on Friday. Taiwan recently signed two agreements with China, one on aviation safety and the other one on taxation. However, as a law to supervise cross-strait agreements is still on the drawing board, there is confusion as to whether the legislature will review the agreements before they can take effect. Hsia said whatever the legislature decides to do, his council will respect its decision.
Hsia is scheduled to meet with head of China’s Taiwan Affairs Office Zhang Zhijung in September. Hsia told the media that the meeting will probably still go ahead even if the legislature in Taiwan decides to scrutinize the agreements.
