Tourism in the southern historic city of Tainan has been affected by a dengue fever outbreak.
As of Friday, the number of dengue fever cases in the city stood at more than 2,500. Four of these cases were fatal.
Head of the Travel Quality Assurance Association, Yen Jui-chi, said on Saturday that many people have decided to cancel their trips to Tainan.
The Tainan City Government has said that it will promote prevention measures against dengue fever on campus after school starts next week. It also said it will call for students and teachers to eliminate sources which cause the viral disease.
According to the latest report by the Centers for Disease Control, 3,005 cases of dengue fever had been reported in all of Taiwan as of Thursday. That’s including 2,839 indigenous cases and 166 cases imported from other countries.
Dengue fever is an infectious tropical disease with symptoms that include fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, and skin rash. In a small proportion of cases, the disease can develop into hemorrhagic dengue fever, which can be fatal.
