UN-related culture body holds conference in Taiwan
Culture minister speaks at CIPA

A UN-related organization that deals with the preservation of cultural sites is holding its first-ever symposium in Taiwan. The organization is the International Committee for Documentation of Cultural Heritage (CIPA). It kicked off its 25th annual meeting in Taipei on Monday.

The theme for this year’s event is “Filling the Gaps: Towards a Globalization Era.”

At the opening ceremony on Monday, Culture Minister Hung Meng-chi spoke about how wars and natural disasters have caused catastrophic damage to valuable cultural heritage in recent years. He said Taiwan is hoping to work with CIPA in the area of digital preservation.

“As a member of the global village, we do want to play an active role in sharing our duty and in working with you to protect those treasures," said Hung.

Hung said he hopes that the symposium can stimulate more interest in the technologies used in cultural preservation.

CIPA is one of the international committees of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), an NGO that offers advice to UNESCO.
