Next year’s election won’t affect cross-strait talks: MAC
Meeting with the foreign diplomatic corps

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) says that next year’s presidential election will not have an effect on talks with China. That was the word from MAC Deputy Minister Lin Chu-chia at a seminar on Monday.

Last week, Taiwan and China signed an agreement on preventing double taxation and another on aviation security. During Monday’s seminar, the foreign ministry explained those agreements to foreign diplomats stationed in Taipei.

When asked whether there would be another round of high-level talks before next January’s presidential election, Lin said the two sides would hold talks as long as there were new agreements to sign.

“These agreements are very important," said Lin. "No matter how the presidential election goes, we will continue with the talks… These important negotiations and talks will keep going. This is our stance.”

The next issues the two sides are likely to discuss include an agreement on trade in goods, and setting up representative offices in each other’s territory.
