Official: KMT led the fight against Japan during WWII
Lien-Xi meeting

The presidential office says the Republic of China (ROC) led the fight against a Japanese invasion during WWII, which is also known as the Second Sino-Japanese War. That’s the word from Presidential Office spokesman Charles Chen on Tuesday.

Chen said it’s an undeniable historical fact that the ROC government led the fight in the War of Resistance Against Japan from 1937 to 1945, on and behind the frontline.

His rebuke came after former Vice President Lien Chan told Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing that the ROC troops were on the frontline whereas the Communist Party of China (CPC) was behind the war zone.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII. The former vice president is in Beijing to attend events commemorating the victory against the Japanese invasion. Lien is also expected to attend a military parade to be held in Tiananmen Square on Wednesday. That’s despite calls from the presidential office that “ROC citizens are advised not to attend it.”

The Republic of China government moved to Taiwan in 1949 following the Chinese civil war, where it governs to this day.
