President Ma Ying-jeou expressed his appreciation to war veterans and their family members, as well as descendants of WWII Allied leaders for helping the Republic of China fight the War of Resistance Against Japan during WWII.
Ma was speaking Tuesday while giving them a medal in honor of their or their ancestors’ contributions. The group includes descendants of former US Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Ma said the war had a great impact on the history of the Chinese-speaking people. He said the Republic of China will remember and thank them forever.
President Ma said Taiwan’s return to ROC rule following the war would not be possible without the Cairo Declaration, the Potsdam Declaration and the Japanese Instrument of Surrender.
The president also thanked the United States for offering assistance to the Republic of China during and after the war.
