Defense ministry calls for heavier sentences on members of Chinese spy ring
Punish the spies

The defense ministry is calling for heavier sentences on members of a Chinese spy ring broken up last year. The ring was led by Chinese intelligence agent Zhen Xiaojiang, who recruited Taiwanese military personnel as spies.

On Monday, the Taipei District Court sentenced Zhen to four years in prison for violations of the National Security Act.

Defense ministry spokesperson Luo Shao-he explained the ministry’s position on the verdict.

“Hsu Nai-chuan  and other retired military personnel received long-term training from the country," said Lo.

"But they lacked an understanding of who the enemy is and endangered national security as a result. We urge the prosecutors to appeal the court’s verdict, and for the court to issue a heavier punishment. The defense ministry would like to stress that the military will continue to work tirelessly to protect the country’s intelligence from spies. We will strengthen patriotic education based on the foundation we have, and carefully protect intelligence.”

Luo also said that as ties between both sides of the Taiwan Strait grow close, military personnel should remain on constant alert. He also urged people to report illegal actions.
