Foreign ministry spokesperson Eleanor Wang says that ties between Taiwan and the United States are at their best since the two sides severed formal diplomatic relations in 1979.
Wang said Thursday that the fact that an invitation Taiwan’s representative to the US received to an event commemorating the end of WWII in Washington is a good example.
“This is the first time that our representative to Washington was invited to attend the event marking the end of WWII since the United States cut off diplomatic ties with Taiwan 36 years ago," said Wang.
"The event was jointly organized by the US government and the private sector. Representative Shen Lyu-shun and representatives of the other Allied Powers jointly attended the roll-call, and they were accorded to the same [diplomatic] etiquette."
Wang said a wreath with Taiwan’s national emblem Shen placed during the event also signals Washington’s respect for Taiwan.
