The number of dengue fever cases recorded in Taiwan since early this summer has reached 4,667. Almost 90% of the cases reported are in the southern city of Tainan.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, unless the number of cases comes down in September, Taiwan is on track to see its worst outbreak of dengue fever since records began in 2003.
As of Thursday, 4,115 infections had been reported in Tainan, an increase of 290 cases from the previous day.
Dengue fever is an infectious tropical disease with symptoms that include fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, and skin rash. In a small number of cases, the disease can develop into hemorrhagic dengue fever, which can be fatal.
