10-20% grade 1-12 students are smartphone addicts: Survey

A new survey has found that between 10 and 20% of students in grades 1-12 are smartphone addicts.

The survey was conducted by the Center for Prevention and Treatment of Internet Addiction, which is jointly operated by Asia University and China Medical University, both based in Taichung.

Addictive behaviors include things like frequently wanting to check for new messages on a mobile device, or being incapable of decreasing usage of that device.

The survey found that while addiction among elementary school students was closer to 10%, it increased to 20% among junior high students and 23% among high school students. That could also be related to the prevalence of smartphones among different age groups. About 41% of elementary school students have their own smart phone, while that number increases to about 71% for junior high students and 86% of high school students.
