The ruling Kuomintang’s (KMT) presidential candidate, Hung Hsiu-chu, has emerged after a three-day hiatus from campaign activities. Hung had announced on her Facebook page on September 2 that she was “suspending hectic campaign activities to engage in deep self-reflection.”
The announcement prompted speculation that Hung was considering stepping out of the race. But at a press conference on Sunday, Hung said that she was in it for the long haul.
Hung said that “Taiwan is really sick,” complaining that the kindness of the people “disappears” whenever politics is concerned. She also said that many politicians do not know what sincerity is.
Hung called for an end to speculation and rumors, saying that she would continue to fight for her ideals under a banner of “sincerity, rationality, and peace.”
